The site of the former Co-Op building in the heart of one of York's oldest streets has been redeveloped to create a new 104-bedroom Ramada Encore hotel with independent retail units on the ground floor.

The original Co-Op building was widely considered to be an inappropriate 1960s form in a highly sensitive, historic environment. It was physically connected to a listed church on an adjacent site and was built over an area known to contain extensive archaeological remains.

An innovative design uses the existing structural grid to reduce the impact on archaeological remains, removing the requirement for extensive archaeological excavations, and reconciles this with the spatial requirements of a modern hotel. The replacement design successfully responds to the variety and historic character of Micklegate and reinstates activity at street level with new shop fronts and retail activity.
